That’s what a local party leader said to me in 2018 when I told them I wanted to challenge my State Senator, a Republican incumbent who had won his last race by 16 points.

They thought my chances, especially as someone who had never held public office, were slim.

But you know what? There’s something freeing about having no expectations put on you. I wasn’t supposed to win. I wasn’t even supposed to run. That meant we got to run the campaign we wanted to run.

So we rallied hundreds of volunteers, knocked on every door we could find, met people in backyards and BBQs and parades and churches and temples and baby showers and wherever they would have us.

And in the end? We beat him by 4 points.

I didn’t stop there. In 2022, I gave a speech, one that I, quite frankly, thought would be my last, but it wasn’t. Instead, it went kinda viral, maybe you saw a friend repost it on Facebook, or happened to catch me talking about it on national news.

I realized something in that moment. I had just been handed a spotlight. And that this could either be fifteen minutes of fame I never wanted and certainly didn’t ask for. Or? We could grab hold of that spotlight, turn it on Michigan, and refuse to let it go.

And that’s exactly what we did.

I showed up on national news a lot thoughout 2022 - talking about Michigan, the opportunity we had in our state legislature to change who was in power for the first time in my lifetime, to talk about issues through the lens of what was happening on the ground - the fall of Roe, the rise of political violence, the economy - and what we were going to do to set things right.

I supported a dozen other candidates running for state senate, brought my volunteers all across the state, raised millions for them, and we helped flip the state senate to Democrats for the first time in nearly 40 years.

When I first launched my campaign for US Senate, at times, I felt like I was back in 2018, figuring it all out all over again. While this campaign is much larger in scale, the north star - what guides me - is the same. It’s not a campaign built on what the party establishment wants. It’s a campaign that is rooted in what Michiganders actually feel.

And just like 2018, there’s freedom in not being the establishment favorite.

Because you know what? Sometimes the establishment is wrong.

It would be easy to look at the millions of dollars pouring in against us, the news that Chuck Schumer is telling all of the major democratic donors and institutions to back one of my opponents. But you know how I’m feeling? Motivated.

I’m motivated by every Michigander I’ve met over more than a year on the campaign trail, traveling to every corner of the state and hosting hundreds of events. I’m motivated by the working men and women using their collective voices through their unions, standing up and fighting back. I’m motivated to win against the right-wing attacks trying to flip this seat red. I’m motivated by my daughter, Noa, and kids across the state who deserve a better future, a better state, and a better country.

Michigan deserves someone who will work to defy the status quo, someone who is willing to stand up to party leadership, and someone who is willing to have the tough conversations. On this campaign, I’ve done that, and I want to continue to do that in Washington.

We don’t have to settle for the way it’s always been. We have a moment where we can stand up and say enough.

Let’s go win this thing.

Whether I’m talking to a lifelong Democrat, a staunch Republican, or an Independent who is completely exhausted by the whole theater of it all, I hear one consistent belief that cuts right through the noise.

People believe their government is corrupt.

And can you blame them?

While families are working harder than ever just to stay afloat — staring down skyrocketing gas prices, realizing that buying a home feels like a distant pipe dream, and finding out that one full-time job doesn’t cover the bills anymore — Washington is playing by a completely different set of rules.

We watch the president peddle meme coins from the campaign trail and take a private jet from Qatar that he’ll keep when he leaves office. We watch him attempt to use the Department of Justice to peddle a $1.8 billion slush fund for his political allies. At the exact same time, we see politicians like Mike Rogers use a revolving door to vote for the interests of Big Pharma, Wall Street, the DeVoses, and the Morouns, only to walk out of office, decline to register as a lobbyist, and cash in immediately as a “consultant” selling access.

It’s exhausting, and it has driven too many Michiganders to lose faith in democracy itself, or worse, to start saying that maybe an authoritarian government would be preferable.

But I refuse to accept that this is just how things are.

We can’t save our democracy unless we build one worth fighting for. We can’t fix the economy, childcare, or healthcare until people actually believe their government is working for them again. You can’t fix anything else until you fix the trust.

That’s why I released my Anti-Corruption Agenda. It’s a sweeping accountability plan designed to do one thing: strip power away from corporations and billionaire megadonors and put it back in your hands.

Here is my plan to clean up Washington:

1. Get Corporate Money Out of Politics

Our elections should be driven by voters, not secret checkbooks.

Ban corporate PAC spending: I will champion a constitutional amendment to overturn Citizens United so we can ban corporate PAC spending in elections once and for all. Corporations are not people.

Pass the DISCLOSE Act: It’s time to force every super PAC, dark money nonprofit, and shell entity to step into the light and reveal exactly who is funding them. No more hiding in the shadows while buying influence.

2. Shut the Revolving Door

Public service should be a sacrifice and a privilege, not a stepping stone to a corporate payday.

A Lifetime Lobbying Ban: If you are elected to represent the public in Congress, you should be banned for life from turning around and selling your inside access to the highest bidder.

Close Lobbying Loopholes: We need to crack down on shadow lobbying. If your job involves selling “government affairs advice” or “strategic consulting” to influence policy — the exact playbook Mike Rogers used — you must register as a lobbyist. No more hiding behind fancy job titles to avoid transparency.

3. Ban Stock Trading and Insider Financial Conflicts

If you have access to nonpublic briefings that can shift markets, you shouldn’t be playing the market.

Ban Stock Trading and Prediction Market Betting: We will ban federal officials, their spouses, and their dependents from trading individual stocks or betting on prediction markets. If you break the law, the penalty will be up to the full value of the trade, and an automatic DOJ referral for insider trading prosecution if you used your position of public trust to make the trade.

No Side Hustles: We will bar federal officials across all three branches from issuing or promoting any financial products—meme coins or otherwise—while they serve.

4. Codify the Norms Trump Broke

We cannot rely on a president’s good behavior or a “gentleman’s agreement” to protect our republic. We need ironclad laws.

End Personal Slush Funds: Ban the president from using the Justice Department to file or settle their own lawsuits at taxpayer expense.

Protect Public Servants: Prohibit the mass purging of career civil servants to replace them with partisan loyalists. We will pass the Protect America’s Workforce Act (PAWA) to permanently codify collective bargaining rights so no president can strip away a million workers’ union contracts with the stroke of an executive order.

Protect the Watchdogs: Ensure Inspectors General can only be fired for true cause — like gross mismanagement—and never as political retaliation. Any termination will require 60 days’ notice and detailed, case-specific reasons provided directly to Congress.

True Divestment: Require sitting presidents and vice presidents to fully divest from business interests into a true, independent blind trust—not a family-managed entity — and mandate the annual public release of their tax returns.

5. Hold the Courts Accountable

The Supreme Court has insulated itself from accountability for far too long. It’s time to bring checks and balances back to the judiciary.

Reform a Broken System: We must explore every option to fix our courts, including expanding the number of Supreme Court justices or instituting a mandatory retirement age of 70 for federal judges—a standard that already works beautifully right here in Michigan.

A Binding Ethics Code: Enforce a real, enforceable code of conduct for all federal judges and Supreme Court justices.

Full Financial Disclosure: If a member of Congress has to report financial details, so should a judge. Any gift or trip worth more than $500 must be reported, with real penalties for those who hide them. No more secret luxury vacations funded by billionaire megadonors.

Strict Recusal and Independent Oversight: Mandate automatic recusal for any judge with a financial stake, a personal relationship, or a pre-established public stance on a case. We will enforce this through independent oversight with teeth — including potential removal from the bench for judges who refuse to comply.

Let’s clean up the system, restore our democracy, and build something we can all believe in again.

We did the heavy lifting to make Michigan a state where everyone is protected equally:

We expanded the Elliott-Larsen Civil Rights Act to explicitly outlaw discrimination against LGBTQ+ Michiganders. For decades, the law left open major loopholes that allowed people to be targeted simply for who they are or who they love. By permanently codifying these protections, we made sure that:

→ Employers can no longer terminate, refuse to hire, or pass over someone for a promotion based on their sexual orientation or gender identity.

→ Landlords and housing providers cannot refuse to rent or sell a home to LGBTQ+ individuals and families.

→ Public businesses — from restaurants and hotels to local shops — cannot deny service or accommodations to anyone in our community.

→ Educational institutions cannot discriminate against students or staff based on who they are or how they express their gender.

We proved that when we refuse to be intimidated, we win. We pass laws that protect families and embrace people for who they are.

Today, none of that changes. It doesn’t change what we accomplished, it doesn’t change our resolve, and it doesn’t change our momentum.

There is still plenty of work left to do, and it’s the exact kind of urgency we need to bring to Washington. But right now? Go celebrate.

To everyone across Michigan: stay loud, stay joyful, and stay proud of who you are. We aren’t backing down.

In the Economic and Community Development Committee, we officially voted to pass my latest piece of legislation out of committee. I’m calling it the “No Reverse Robin Hood Act.”

The premise is simple: If a corporation receives taxpayer-funded economic incentives to build, expand, or create jobs in Michigan, they should be legally prohibited from corporate stock buybacks for the duration of that agreement.

Public dollars must be used for public benefit. Period.

When our state hands out economic incentives, it is done with an explicit promise to the people of Michigan: that this money will build our local economy. It’s meant to expand jobs, grow a company’s footprint, invest in research and development, and lift up workers through better wages, salaries, and benefits.

What it is not meant to do is line the pockets of wealthy shareholders while local workers get left behind.

If a company takes investment of your hard-earned dollars and uses it to upskill workers, stabilize jobs, and build up our communities, you can make a fair argument that the investment benefits the entire state if those investments result in a multiplier effect (when new jobs are created, those wages would support more restaurants, shops, downtowns, suppliers etc). But right now, too many corporations are taking public money, turning right around, and executing record-shattering stock buybacks to artificially inflate their share prices.

Worse yet? These buybacks routinely happen right alongside mass layoffs. We are effectively subsidizing the termination of Michigan workers.

During our committee hearing, we heard testimony from a researcher at the UAW who reminded everyone of an important truth: stock buybacks have not always been the norm. In fact, they were entirely illegal under federal law until the SEC altered its rules in the early 1980s. Since that guardrail was removed, corporate priorities have aggressively shifted away from worker investment and entirely toward shareholder supremacy.

It is a broken system, and we are paying for it.

If this legislation passes the full legislature and is signed by the Governor, Michigan will become the first state in the entire country to ban stock buybacks for companies receiving state tax incentives.

The best part? This isn’t a partisan issue. It’s a common-sense issue. We voted this bill out of committee with genuine bipartisan support.

“People outside the field are often surprised and alarmed to learn that we do not understand how our own AI creations work.”

He warned these systems will soon be “absolutely central to the economy, technology, and national security.”

That was last April. Here’s (some) of what’s happened since:

• GPT-5 came out in August, multiples more capable than its predecessor.

• By February, GPT-5.3 and Claude Opus 4.6 were in the field.

• In April, Anthropic confirmed it had built Claude Mythos — and decided it was too dangerous to release. In testing, Mythos was placed in a secure system and instructed to escape. It did. The researcher working on the model was sitting in a park, eating a sandwich, when the AI emailed him to let him know that it had escaped.

• That same month, the UK AI Safety Institute reported that frontier models had “substantially exceeded” trend lines of capability. The ability for these AI systems to autonomously launch cyberattacks is doubling roughly every six months.

• Software firms, banks, and federal contractors have now deployed AI coding agents that write, test, and ship code autonomously. Amodei predicted last summer that AI would write 90% of all code within a year. We’re on pace to hit that prediction.

AI labs are now using their own models to build the next generation of AI — AI is training AI. The point at which AI is autonomously rewriting its own code and designing its successor— what researchers call recursive self-improvement — is coming.

Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI, has said AI could “end the world.” Amodei has put the likelihood of “catastrophic outcomes” at 25%.

Meanwhile, every AI lab is trapped in an arms race. Slow down for safety work, and your competitor releases their product first, raises the next round of funding, and potentially poaches your best employees. The structural incentive is to move fast and break things.

And the federal response?

The Trump Administration has rolled back much of what little oversight existed, welcomed billionaire tech executives Musk and Thiel into the rulemaking room, and locked the American people out.

From cars to aircraft to baby formula to medical equipment and medications, we rightfully expect that products sold or released to the public are tested and proven safe. But imagine if companies said, “We tested it ourselves. We’re not sure how it works. Just trust us.”

But that’s exactly how we’re regulating (or more accurately, not regulating), the most powerful technology ever built. The AI labs grade their own homework, decide what to test, determine what counts as “safe enough,” and release their product onto the public.

I’m running for U.S. Senate because Michigan deserves a senator willing to lead on this issue and say plainly what almost no one in Washington will: we are sleepwalking through the most consequential technological transition in history, and the people building it have told us they can’t promise it goes well.

I’ve spent months talking to the people building this technology, the researchers warning about it, and the workers already being displaced by it. With their input, I’ve put together a comprehensive plan to put AI development under public oversight, in the public interest, on the public’s terms.

It is built around three ideas.

1. Transparency and testing

The most powerful AI models – what researchers call “frontier” models – should have to pass independent safety review before they are released to the public. This transparency is the bare minimum, and these companies should not rely on self-certification, and definitely not voluntary commitments. We need real, independent testing, the way we test drugs and aircraft.

That requires a federal government with actual technical capacity to evaluate these systems — so the plan calls for a national AI lab, modeled on the national labs that built and oversee America’s nuclear technology.

When something goes wrong — dangerous model behavior, real-world harm from deployment — companies should have to be equally transparent about that, the way airlines report near-misses and hospitals report adverse events. Right now they don’t. We find out from news coverage after things go horribly wrong.

We also need to fight industry efforts to broadly preempt state AI law and bar states from building on federal floors. And we need real whistleblower protections. Every major safety scandal in modern history — tobacco, Boeing, Theranos — had a whistleblower. AI will be no different. The people closest to these systems are often the most worried about them.

2. Keep American AI American.

The most powerful models on earth are built here. That’s a strategic asset, and a massive target. China is buying our chips through diversion routes and trying to steal our models — and the labs themselves admit their security wouldn’t survive a serious nation-state attack.

The plan strengthens export controls on advanced chips, requires labs to harden security to government-grade standards backed by federal threat intelligence, and treats the theft of a frontier model as a national security event far exceeding losing a stealth fighter blueprint.

It also takes the international piece seriously: shared standards with allies, real pressure on chip diversion to authoritarian regimes, and a binding international prohibition on putting AI inside the nuclear chain of command. In a recent King’s College study of war game simulations using current models, nuclear use was “near-universal.“

3. Keep humans in charge.

AI is already deciding who gets a job, a loan, a home, health care. Most people on the receiving end have no idea AI was involved. They can’t ask why and can’t appeal.

You should have a right to know when AI is used in a high-stakes decision about your life — and a right to appeal to an actual human being. You should control what companies do with your data, including the chat logs being fed back into the next generation of models without your consent.

We should crack down on non-consensual deepfakes and require AI-generated content to carry traceable provenance markers.

And no AI should ever decide, on its own, to kill a human being in a military context. A qualified person, fully informed, in real time, must be the one to make any decision to use lethal force.

Some of the most thoughtful voices on AI risk are in Silicon Valley — many of them inside the labs. For years, they have been asking Washington to act. The current regulatory vacuum rewards the worst actors and punishes the most responsible ones. A serious safety framework is good for the people building AI well.

Throughout history, the government has been too slow to act in the face of products causing harm that could otherwise have been prevented. Before seatbelts, over 30,000 people died every year in car accidents. It took the advocacy of medical professionals and engineers to force change, when the companies themselves fought tooth and nail against that change.

In the mid-20th century, lung cancer deaths in the US had climbed from a few thousand per year in the 1930s to over 40,000 annually, with smoking established as the cause in medical literature by the early 1950s. It took the advocacy of epidemiologists, public health officials, and eventually state attorneys general to force change – even with fierce opposition from Big Tobacco.

This transition is happening faster than any previous technology. The systems are more powerful and the stakes are higher. The people building these models are telling us, plainly, that the window to put guardrails in place is closing.

AI is going to reshape the world. The only question is whether it reshapes it on Silicon Valley billionaires’ terms, or on ours.

What about my job? What about my kid’s job?

Americans are already being roiled by this disruption. Law firms are using AI to do the document review that used to be done by first-year associates. Warehouses are using autonomous mobile robots to move heavy pallets. Investment banks are using it for the modeling that used to be done by analysts. Consulting firms, accounting firms, tech companies, agriculture — all using AI to do the work that used to be done by the people just starting out. Just last week, Acrisure, a Grand Rapids-based insurance company, announced they’re planning to cut 2250 jobs over the next year due to AI.

Meanwhile, the federal government’s response is severely lacking… or worse, is exacerbating the problem. The people writing federal AI policy right now are the same billionaire tech executives who stand to make the most money from displacing American workers. Under the Trump administration, there’s no one in the room speaking for workers.

Worse yet, across both sides of the aisle, too many legislators or candidates refuse to take on AI and Big Tech for fear that they’ll unleash their millions of dollars in spending against them in their campaigns.

While the industry gets its way, people suffer.

For too long prior to the impact of AI, income inequality has risen as the Middle Class has shrunk. Since 1980, income of the bottom 50% of the population has grown about 20%. Meanwhile, the top 10 percent have enjoyed 145% growth, all the social safety net hasn’t evolved alongside it. Without action now, AI will intensify these economic challenges.

AI will cause a seismic shift across just about every industry.

That shift, however, gives us the opportunity to reshape our economy to finally put people first. But only if we act now.

So today I’m releasing the first part of my plan to put AI on workers’ terms, who are going to bear the brunt of this transition.

1. Establish an AI Workforce Reinvestment Fund

This plan would create a new AI Workforce Reinvestment Fund that would require companies that automate away jobs to contribute pooled resources to fund training and upskilling for American workers struggling to find or keep work because of AI. From young people trying to find their foothold in an industry they care about as entry-level jobs are eliminated, to veteran workers who have devoted years of their lives to jobs that will be automated before they can save up enough for retirement.

2. Create a Federal Apprenticeship Program and Fund Retraining and Upskilling

The AI Workforce Reinvestment Fund will include a first-of-its-kind federal apprenticeship effort – built for the knowledge and office economy, whose jobs are most at risk for AI disruption. Junior workers displaced for entry-level jobs by AI would train for real, senior-level work from day one — for example: shadowing negotiations, working with and managing others, sitting in on client presentations, learning the judgment and strategy AI is bad at and will likely remain bad at for a long time. This will rebuild the career ladder for a generation locked out of entry-level jobs and benefit companies that need to build a pipeline of talent for senior-level jobs (at the companies’ expense).

After all, it’s impossible to get a mid-level management position without first building real-world job experience in more entry-level roles.

The Fund will also include broader retraining across industries of all types through public workforce institutions like the American Job Center network and Michigan Works! As AI tools touch everything from manufacturing, to agriculture, to construction – it’s essential to not just provide a paycheck, but to ensure every worker has access to meaningful work.

3. Strengthen the safety net for the transition.

We can do everything right on apprenticeships and retraining and still have people who fall through the cracks. That’s what a safety net is for, and we need to ensure the net is sufficient for any and all who need it.

My plan would strengthen Unemployment Insurance, TANF, SNAP, and Medicaid for all workers. No American family should lose their healthcare, their food, or their housing because the company they worked for decided a chatbot could do their job.

4. Institute a “Token Tax.”

My plan would adopt a “Token Tax” – a modest fee on commercial AI usage. Tokens are essentially how AI usage is measured (one token is usually about ¾ of a word on the ChatGPT or Claude model you use on your phone). As AI scales to billions of queries (trillions of tokens) a day, this tax becomes a sustainable funding stream for government programs, including the programs above — without raising taxes on a single American worker.

We’ve weathered major economic disruptions before. Sometimes, policymakers have responded well – the GI Bill, the building of the trades, the expansion of community colleges. Other times, it’s gone poorly – gutting American manufacturing and decimating small towns in Michigan and across the country.

The difference wasn’t whether the technology that led to the disruption was good or bad. It was whether the policymakers showed up for the workers, or whether they handed too much power to the corporations to make the final calls.

This transition is projected to be faster than any economic disruption before. The window to prevent disaster is much smaller. The people building this technology are openly telling us they expect millions of jobs to be eliminated in the next decade.

Now is the time to decide if we’re going to take charge of this transition or let it drown us. Let’s put families and workers first – not billionaires.

You’d want to pay right away, right?

Except Michigan doesn’t have a “DMV,” we renew our licenses at the Secretary of State’s office.

Oh, and we don’t have toll roads.

But it’s convincing enough to work.

Because if it’s not a text, it’s a sophisticated AI voice clone of a grandkid calling a senior, begging for emergency money. It’s a fraudulent Facebook ad targeting a family looking for affordable housing, or a fake tech-support pop-up draining the savings of a neighbor who just wanted to fix their computer.

Right now, three out of four American adults have been targeted by an online scam. It is an avalanche of fraud that is draining $119 billion a year out of the pockets of everyday people nationwide. Here in Michigan, that bill comes out to $1.7 billion annually — about $350 per consumer.

Think about what that money means right now. As we face a brutal affordability crisis squeezed tighter by Trump’s erratic tariffs and escalating conflict in Iran, every single dollar matters. That $350 is groceries, the electric bill, or next month’s prescription.

But while Michigan families are paying the price, scammers are laughing all the way to the bank.

This is happening because online scams are enormously profitable for Big Tech.

Platforms make money from running these ads, giving them zero incentive to go after bad actors. They provide the precise ad-targeting services that allow transnational criminal organizations operating overseas to reach our most vulnerable neighbors. Meta alone projected that roughly 10% of its total revenue — a staggering $16 billion — would come directly from scam advertisements.

They pocket the cash, hide behind technology, and leave you to pay the price. It’s on elected officials to hold these platforms accountable.

Today, I’m releasing a plan to stop the avalanche of spammy texts, ads, and traps scamming Michiganders and put that $1.7 billion back where it belongs…in your pockets.

My Plan to Crack Down on Online Scams:

End the Free Pass for Scam Ads: We must narrow Section 230 — tech’s ultimate liability shield — to exclude paid advertisements so platforms can actually be held legally liable when they profit off hosting fraud.

Verify Who is Buying Ads: We must require online platforms to verify the true identity of advertisers before allowing them to purchase advertisements and pop up on your feed.

Label Country of Origin: To promote American businesses and combat overseas scammers, we will mandate country-of-origin labeling for all paid digital advertisements.

Fund State-Level Prosecution: We will provide dedicated federal funding to state Attorneys General to aggressively pursue and prosecute online scams, building upon the incredible initiatives already led by Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel.

Create an Online Scam Victims Compensation Fund: We will establish a federal fund seeded by civil penalties and settlement proceeds from enforcement actions against platforms, financial institutions, and fraudsters, giving scam victims a direct path to financial recovery.

Privacy by Default: We must require platforms to set accounts to the highest privacy settings by default — drastically reducing exposure to unsolicited direct messages and spam texts.

Aggressively Purge Fraudulent Profiles: We will direct platforms to use their data and technology to more aggressively detect and prevent the creation of fraudulent profiles.

Force Platforms to Respond to Users: We will force platforms to establish an accessible scam reporting system — and legally require them to acknowledge receipt of scam reports and provide updates on actions taken within a specified timeframe.

For too long, Washington has let Big Tech lobbyists dictate the rules of the road, leaving consumers entirely on their own to navigate a digital minefield.

We can’t just tell people to “be careful what they click on” anymore. The scams have gotten too sophisticated, and the financial stakes are simply too high. It’s on us to show these executive boardrooms that their era of consequence-free profiteering at the expense of our families is over.

For too long, our politics has rewarded corporate greed over common-sense safety. If you believe it’s time to protect our families and hold these platforms accountable, I hope you’ll stand with us.

And I gotta tell you — what I actually see out there versus the noise we see online gives me so much hope.

I don’t see a state divided and ready to tear each other apart like you might believe from cable news or social media. I see Michiganders who are tired of the noise, fed up with the chaos, and ready to be a part of building what our country can and should be. And they’re looking for their next US Senator to be a part of building that with them.

There is a gap between what the pundits in Washington are saying and what I’m hearing from you. But every once in a while, the data catches up to reality.

A new poll just landed, and it confirms exactly what I’ve been feeling on the ground: I’m in a dead heat with the Trump-endorsed Republican in this race.

The latest data confirms that we have closed the gap to a statistical tie, gaining a net of two points since last May and moving well within the margin of error.

Meanwhile, the polling also shows I am the Democrat best positioned to win this seat. While our campaign continues to gain ground, other candidates in this primary have either remained stagnant or seen their margins against the GOP widen. In fact, while we have been cutting into the Republican lead, one primary opponent has lost a net of three points over the last year — meaning their momentum is headed in the wrong direction — while another remains consistently underwater, trailing the GOP by 5 points. As the only campaign showing a proven ability to erode Republican support, we are the clear choice to hold this seat in November.

We’re on our ninth oil change of this campaign (what a way to track it). And seeing this progress, I can tell you everyone on our team would welcome a moment to ease up a little bit.

But when you’ve got momentum, you don’t let up before the finish line, you push harder and run through tape.

A year ago, pundits said there’s no way I’d have a shot at this. In a primary versus a sitting member of Congress and a candidate who has already run statewide, this campaign was the longest of long shots.

Now?

Ours is the strongest campaign to beat Mike Rogers, hand Trump a loss, and put Democrats on the path to flipping control of the US Senate.

The other side knows it, too. Rogers has already dropped a six-figure ad buy to try and define this race before summer even starts. And he’s smart — talking about all the right things. His ads feature him shaking hands with people in classrooms and workshops — talking about bringing back shop class and expanding apprenticeships. And those are all great things! But when reporters ask, Rogers doesn’t dare to ever get on the wrong side of Trump — applauding Trump’s illegal war in Iran that’s costing us billions, celebrating Trump’s threats to keep the Gordie Howe Bridge from opening, and even laughing off the rising costs of coffee and gas.

Behind him, there is an entire infrastructure of dark-money groups waiting to flood our airwaves with ads that will try to tear me down AND tell a very different story of what Mike Rogers would do in the Senate than what he’ll actually do — rubber-stamp Trump’s agenda.

I have never been someone who takes the easy path, and I don’t intend to start now. Because I refuse to take corporate PAC money, I don’t have a massive network of special interests funding my campaign. I have you.

We are building a movement that is about restoring a sense of normalcy, focusing on the issues that actually impact our lives — like rooting out corruption, taking on Big Tech and AI to protect our kids, and building an economy that actually works for you.

Michiganders deserve a Senator who will actually fight for them. Let’s be clear-eyed here: We will be outspent, but we can out-organize them if we stay focused on the work.

I became a mom in January of 2021. My daughter, Noa, is five now. She is hilarious, deeply curious, and keeps me on my toes every single day. Becoming her mom is hands down the best thing that has ever happened to me.

It was also the hardest.

A few weeks into my pregnancy, I woke up one morning bleeding. A lot. It was 2020, the height of the pandemic. My husband, Ray, had to drop me at the ER door — he wasn’t allowed inside. I sat there for hours, alone and terrified that this little person I hadn’t even met yet would be gone before her life truly began.

Noa was born healthy, but the struggle didn’t end at delivery. I dealt with postpartum depression. There were days I would lock myself in the bathroom and cry, unable to even explain why. I felt like I had lost my identity while sitting in a breastfeeding chair for hours on end. It took a long time to find my way back to myself.

So many women go through this alone. They’re told to “suck it up,” to get back to work, to just “figure it out.”

We love to say “it takes a village,” but in America, we don’t actually build one.

We are the only industrialized nation on Earth that doesn’t guarantee paid leave. Our maternal mortality rate is a national embarrassment — and for Black women, it is three to four times higher than for white women. We have a system where the school day ends at 2:00 PM, the workday ends at 5:00 PM, and we’ve decided that the three-hour gap is just a “mom problem” to solve.

In Michigan, we decided we weren’t going to wait for permission to help families. We got to work. We codified abortion access because the first decision a woman makes is whether and when to become a mom. That choice belongs to her alone. We expanded access to doulas and midwives to make giving birth safer. We created universal pre-K, saving families $10,000 to $15,000 a year, and passed a universal breakfast and lunch program so no child learns on an empty stomach. We passed sweeping gun violence prevention and “kids-over-clicks” legislation to protect our children from big tech and AI.

I am running for the United States Senate because we need voices in the room who are actually living these challenges.

When moms of young children aren’t at the table, family policies are the first thing on the chopping block. We saw it when paid leave was killed in the Build Back Better Act. We see it when funding for SNAP and Head Start is threatened.

I want Noa to grow up with more rights than I had, not fewer. I want her to have clean air, safe schools, and one day — maybe — a house she can actually afford to buy.

But until then, let’s stop just thanking moms and start supporting them. Let’s actually build that village.

But none of this was inevitable.

It was a choice — a choice by Donald Trump and Donald Trump alone (and every Republican in the US House and Senate who refused to exercise their power to rein him in via the War Powers Act for allowing him to do whatever he wants).

Back in January, Trump dismissed the guardrails of international law, telling us, “I don’t need international law. My own morality. My own mind. That’s the only thing that can stop me.”

Then he came back to Congress pleading for $1.5 trillion (with a T) for his war, all while callously declaring at an Easter luncheon, “We can’t take care of daycare…[The states] should pay. They have to raise their taxes…It’s not possible for us to take care of daycare, Medicare, Medicaid, all of these individual things.”

That’s right, he demanded $1.5 trillion of our taxpayer dollars to pay for his war while telling us that our own states should tax us more to pay for healthcare and childcare for our own people.

I hear the same thing from people everywhere: it’s getting harder and harder to make ends meet. And the frustration mounts as we watch the President talk about service members as expendable, someone who seems unnervingly comfortable writing off their sacrifice. Because let’s be clear — Trump won’t pay the price for this war. Who will? Working class Americans — in their rising bills, mounting costs, crushing debt, or even with their lives.

Gas prices are hovering around $5.00 a gallon across Michigan. Even worse, we’ve landed in the top 10 most expensive gas markets in the country.

Trump won the Presidency again on a campaign that promised prices would drop. Today they’re higher than ever. He promised to be the President to end wars, not start them. Now — between Venezuela, Iran, Cuba (?) meetings with Putin — it’s hard to keep up. They promised to “Make America Healthy Again”— and yet, we’re seeing preventable diseases like measles make a comeback because of their mismanagement.

We deserve leaders who will prioritize the security and stability of American families over political ego. We need a government that works for you, not against you.

We can’t keep settling for a system that favors billionaires while the rest of us are squeezed to the breaking point. It’s time for a different approach. It’s time to build something better.

I wanted to create events that were open to the public and — dare I say — fun? Because let’s face it — most people will never come to a town hall or a candidate forum…not because they don’t care, but because unless you’re already entrenched in politics, it’s kind of a weird thing to do.

What’s a normal thing to do? Heading out to grab a drink or a bite to eat with your family and friends.

I thought it would be a great way to ease into the campaign — something we would do throughout the first Spring and Summer last year.

Then over 200 people showed up at our first stop. And we’ve made the events a permanent staple of our campaign.

So this past weekend, we hit a milestone — stop 20 of McMorrow on Tap — at Starters in Southfield.

We’ve all seen the traditional campaign model: a candidate shows up, speaks at you from behind a podium, shakes a few hands, and promptly leaves. I wanted to change that.

I wanted to talk with people.

I’ve spent the past year traveling across the state, and I’m choosing to do it in breweries for a reason. Whether you’re a die-hard supporter or you’re still making up your mind, the best conversations don’t happen in a sterile conference room. They don’t happen in rooms full of neatly-placed lines of chairs with people waiting patiently to hear from the candidate.

That’s a one-way conversation. It’s talking at you instead of talking with you.

It’s helped me hear directly from people about the things that matter — we’ve had ex-federal workers come out sharing how DOGE cut their jobs and the impact on their families. We’ve met people who moved from somewhere else in the country to make their home in Michigan, who want to make sure this is a place their kids will stay. We’ve talked foreign policy, healthcare, parenting tips, favorite beers, and the Olympics. We met a young woman who had just graduated with her Master’s in Social Work from Wayne State, who came out with friends, not knowing we were going to be there (thanks for letting me celebrate with you!), and so much more.

Anyone can come to our brewery tours and ask me anything. No pre-screened questions on notecards nonsense. Yeah, that means sometimes there are some tough questions in the room. And we might not always agree. But that’s exactly why these events are so perfect. Because that’s life. And I’m not interested in fake. I’m interested in real, raw, and honest.

And yes, we’re allowed to have a little fun along the way.

My love for this isn’t just about the beer, though Michigan’s brewers are consistently the best in the country. It’s about the fact that this industry is a massive, homegrown powerhouse. We’re talking 17,000 jobs and a $2.4 billion impact on our economy.

That’s why I was so incredibly honored to receive the 2025 Defender of Michigan Beer Award from the Michigan Brewers Guild last year.

When I accepted that award in Kalamazoo, I thought back to a specific fight we had in Lansing. A bill popped up that looked like a standard policy update, but it would have seriously undercut our craft brewers. I was the lone NO vote on the bill, not because it was the easy path, but because our local businesses — the ones that define the character of our neighborhoods — needed someone in their corner. That NO vote caused the bill, as written, to die. State House Reps weren’t sold when it came over to their chamber. And that pause allowed the brewers to come together with the distributors this year to write legislation together that benefited them both. It can be hard feeling like you’re the little guy going up against big industry. But I’m proud to be that voice, and I’ll keep standing up for our brewers, small business owners, and innovators when I get to Washington.

20 stops in, and the message is clear: when we get together, grab a drink, and lower the heat, we can actually talk with each other instead of yelling at each other.

Couldn’t our country use a little more of that these days?

It’s a day to remember that the 40-hour work week, the weekend, and the safety standards we often take for granted weren’t gifts from benevolent corporations. They were won by people who organized, marched, and put everything on the line to demand a seat at the table.

In Michigan, we’ve proven that we can still do big things for working people. We’ve shown that when we build power and fight alongside labor, we win. When I helped lead the way in flipping the Michigan Senate (for the first time since 1984!), Michigan became the first state in nearly 60 years to repeal so-called Right to Work — a deceptive term for state-level laws that prohibit unions from collecting fees from non-members they are still legally required to represent, even if those employees had voted to unionize. These laws proliferated around the country, eroding the power of unions. We also reinstated the prevailing wage, repealed a tax on seniors’ pensions and retirement funds, passed some of the strongest paid sick leave laws in the country, and raised the minimum wage while finally pegging it to inflation so families don’t fall behind.

But as much as we’ve accomplished, there is still so much more work to do.

We don’t have to settle for a system that favors billionaires over working families — you know, the ones who make everything work.

For me, this is my family’s story.

My grandpa was a lineman. He had a high school education, served his country in the Army, and then spent his entire career with the same telephone company. His union was more than just a job — it gave him something real: a steady paycheck, benefits, and the dignity to take care of his family, including a son with disabilities.

When the storms hit, my dad told me how my grandpa “hauled his ass out of bed” and climbed those poles to fix the damage and restore service while everyone else stayed safely inside. He worked hard his whole life, and his union made sure that work was worth something. Because of that union, he retired with enough security to spend his time with the people he loved most — including me.

He passed away from cancer far too young, and I will be forever grateful that his union gave him the freedom to be present for his family while we still had him.

So when the Utility Workers Union of America, UA Plumbers and Pipefitters, and the International Association of Sheet Metal, Air, Rail and Transportation workers, endorsed this campaign, and I became the only candidate to receive endorsements from multiple national unions and union locals, I didn’t take that honor lightly. I know firsthand what a union means to a family, not just in the moment, but across generations. These workers — from nurses to teachers to public sector employees to letter carriers to auto, rail, and utility workers — are out there right now making sacrifices for all of us and making sure our country runs.

They deserve a government that puts workers over billionaires.

It’s the honor of this campaign to have so many union members standing with us.

For years, Washington power brokers have operated on a simple, outdated premise: pick the candidate, clear the field, and convince donors that the status quo is the only path to safety. But that model assumes that voters are content with the current state of affairs.

They aren’t.

We are currently seeing the Democratic Party hit record-low approval ratings, and frankly, it’s not a mystery why. Voters are tired of being told, “Well, we don’t have the majority, so we can’t do anything.” They are tired of the gimmicks. They are tired of candidates who treat a U.S. Senate race like a favor to be granted by party insiders rather than a responsibility to be earned from the people.

When I launched this campaign, I decided to break that mold.

While others in this race were — and still are — avoiding hard questions to protect their standing with Washington insiders, I made it clear from day one: I will not vote for Chuck Schumer for leader.

We are facing a MAGA-led opposition that doesn’t play by the old rules, and yet, our party leadership remains committed to a strategy that is consistently falling short.

I entered this race because Michigan deserves a voice that isn’t beholden to the status quo. We are building a campaign that is funded by people, not corporate PACs, and driven by a vision for the future — not a commitment to the past.

But running against the establishment is expensive. They have the money and the infrastructure. What they don’t have is the momentum of a movement that is actually listening to voters.

There is nothing quite like the energy of a Michigan Democratic Party convention. It’s the sound of thousands of people in one room, the sea of signs, the reunions with organizers I haven’t seen since the last cycle, and that unmistakable sense of shared purpose.

If you’ve been scrolling through your feed lately, you know how heavy the world feels right now. It is easy to feel small when the headlines are dominated by divisiveness and the weight of the challenges ahead.

But then I walked onto that stage yesterday. I looked out at the faces of people from the 4th, the 7th, and the 10th districts who are fired up to flip their seats blue and take back the US House of Representatives. I saw the volunteers who have spent years knocking on doors that never seemed to open — until one day, they did.

And suddenly, the anxiety lifts. Because when the world feels down, that is precisely when we come together. And when we come together, we don’t just hope for change.

We build power.

After speaking to the crowd yesterday, let me tell you, Michigan Democrats are feeling ready.

I remember when I first ran for the State Senate. People told me flipping my seat was impossible. It was too red — the mountain was too high. But we didn’t listen. We knocked tens of thousands of doors. We talked to our neighbors about the things that actually matter: great schools, healthcare that doesn’t bankrupt you, and a tax code that favors working families over billionaires.

We proved them wrong. Then, in 2022, we organized again, flipped the entire Michigan Senate, and got to work. We repealed the retirement tax, protected the right to choose, and passed the largest working families tax credit in state history.

We didn’t just imagine a better tomorrow. We built one.

That is the energy I’m carrying with me today. It’s the energy of a party that is coalescing — not just because we’re angry at the current administration, but because we are deeply, stubbornly protective of our future.

This campaign for the United States Senate isn’t about one person. As I told our caucuses yesterday, no one person is going to fix this. Not even someone holding the title of US Senator.

None of us can do this alone.

But together we can. And we will.

We can show Washington how to fight like Michigan.

I wouldn’t change it for the world. But I found myself wishing it were easier for moms. And I recognize that for whatever struggles I faced as a new mom — a scare early in pregnancy that required hospitalization, challenges breastfeeding after she came, bouts of postpartum depression, and struggling to reclaim my own identity — I was privileged in a way many in this country are not.

The United States makes motherhood a uniquely isolating experience. “It takes a village,” we’re told, but too often women are expected to give birth and quickly go back to work without access to paid leave.

And that’s if you even survive childbirth.

In the United States, Black women are three times more likely to die during childbirth than white women. Our country spends over $111B per year on maternal healthcare, yet has some of the worst maternal and infant outcomes among wealthy nations. Yet two-thirds of maternal deaths in the US could be prevented with better care, support, and accountability — something that could save Black mothers’ and babies’ lives.

This week marks Black Maternal Health Week, a time to reflect on a reality that is as heartbreaking as it is preventable: we are facing a maternal mortality crisis that is disproportionately claiming the lives of Black women. In Michigan, Black women are more than 75% more likely to die from pregnancy-related causes than White women. More than 80% of pregnancy-related deaths are preventable.

This isn't just about socioeconomic status or access to care. Even when you control for those factors, the disparity persists. It’s about a system that too often ignores Black women’s pain, dismisses their concerns, and leaves them behind in maternal care deserts, which now cover nearly 22% of Michigan’s counties.

We’ve started the work in the Michigan Senate to fix this, thanks to the leadership of activists and advocates here in Michigan. And we need to do more.

I’m proposing a national Maternal Health Care Agenda that treats the birth of a child as the sacred, high-stakes moment it is — not as an opportunity for insurance companies to cut corners.

• Expand Birth Centers and Midwifery: We need to increase access to freestanding birth centers. These facilities are proven to lower preterm birth rates and decrease NICU admissions.

• Mandatory Coverage for Doulas and Midwives: My agenda would require Medicaid and private insurers to reimburse for licensed midwife and doula care. We know that mothers with doulas are less likely to deliver via C-section — reducing the risk of hemorrhage and infection, the two leading causes of postpartum death.

• Protecting Maternal Mental Health: My plan requires coverage for maternal mental health services and remote monitoring, like off-site ultrasounds and fetal nonstress tests, so that care meets moms where they are.

• Reversing Federal Cuts: We must reverse the cuts to Medicaid and the Affordable Care Act. Four in 10 births in the U.S. are financed by Medicaid; stripping this coverage would kick 300,000 people in Michigan off their insurance and shutter the very rural hospitals families rely on.

• Rx Kids Nationwide: We’ve seen the success of the Rx Kids cash grant program in Flint and across Michigan. I want to scale this program nationally to ensure every new mom has the financial stability to focus on her health and her baby.

• National Paid Sick Leave: No mother should have to choose between a paycheck and a postpartum checkup. We need Michigan’s Earned Paid Sick Leave at the federal level.

I can’t take credit for this work alone. I’ve had the privilege and honor of serving alongside incredible women who have advocated for Black moms and babies for years during my time in the State Senate, including Senators Erika Geiss, Sylvia Santana, Stephanie Chang, and Sarah Anthony. This plan builds on some of the best work they’ve led on at the state level alongside organizations such as Mothering Justice to ensure moms and babies throughout Michigan and across the country have access to maternal health care that puts them first.

For too long, the United States has accepted the highest maternal mortality rate in the developed world as a sad fact. In the wealthiest country on earth, allowing a mother to die because we refused to value her life or hear her pain isn’t just a policy failure — it’s a betrayal of our most basic human duty to one another.

I’m running for the U.S. Senate because I’m tired of seeing mothers become statistics. We have the blueprints for what works, thanks to the activists and advocates who have done the heavy lifting. Now, we need the political will to treat Black maternal health like the national emergency it is.

And as I turned in my signatures today, I looked at the crowd and realized: These are the people who did this. Not me. Them.

Over the last year, hundreds of volunteers — people with full-time jobs and kids and lives and a million other things they could have been doing — chose to spend their weekends at “No Kings” rallies. They brought signature sheets to their book clubs. They stood outside farmers’ markets and grocery stores in the freezing rain, asking their neighbors to sign a petition for a better future.

Because of them, we didn’t just hit the required number to be on the ballot. We turned in 30,000 signatures today — the maximum number the state of Michigan allows.

We didn’t leave anything on the field.

When we talk about organizing, it can feel like a buzzword. But in this campaign, organizing looks like Chris.

Chris is one of our incredible volunteers who retired from his career in 2025 and decided he couldn’t just sit on the sidelines while he was worried about the direction of our country. When we needed signatures, Chris didn’t just look around his neighborhood. He looked at a map, pointed to the very tip of the Keweenaw Peninsula — the furthest point North you can go in Michigan — and said, “I’ll go there.”

Chris traveled over 500 miles from his home to Keweenaw County. He went door-to-door and business-to-business. He sat down for dinner at a local restaurant and ended up talking to every single person in the room.

It’s because of people like Chris — people willing to step outside their comfort zone and travel the extra mile — that we are going to win this November.

I’ve been doing this for a little while now. Back in 2018, during my very first run for State Senate, I was a total unknown. I was running against a Republican incumbent who had won his district by 16 points.

Nobody thought we could win. But we had volunteers. We knocked every door. We flipped that district 20 points in a single cycle, and a few years later, we helped Democrats take back control of the Michigan Senate for the first time in nearly 40 years.

That is what this movement does.

Our volunteers didn’t just collect signatures in the easy places. We got signatures from all 83 Michigan counties. Every single one. From the farmers in the UP who are getting crushed by tariffs, to the small business owners in Detroit watching inflation eat into everything they’ve built, to the parents across this state who just want to know their kids are going to be okay.

These 30,000 signatures are 30,000 Michiganders saying: We want something better. We want a future where our kids grow up with more rights, more opportunity, and more freedom than we had — not less.

This is about is all of us, together, doing the hard, unglamorous, beautiful work of showing up.

I’m just one person. But together? We are a movement. And this November, we are going to protect this seat, take back the Senate, and send Mike Rogers back home to Florida.

We have some numbers that prove exactly who is powering this engine. In the first quarter of 2026, we raised over $3 million.

That’s a monster number, the biggest of any Michigan Senate candidate on either side of the aisle this cycle so far.

Let’s get this out of the way — it’s disgusting that campaigns cost so much money. We need to overturn Citizens United. We need to get dark money out of politics.

That’s the Catch-22 — we need to get into power to have the power to change it.

But that doesn’t mean we can’t show a different way forward.

When I launched this campaign a year ago, I committed to running without a dime of corporate PAC money. I knew that would make it much harder to raise the money we’d need, especially to go up against the seemingly endless spigot of dark MAGA money that Mike Rogers will have at his disposal.

It was a risk.

But what gives me hope? That you’re with us. In a BIG way.

This $3 million belongs to the teachers, the union members, the parents, and the neighbors who are tired of being told that their voices don’t matter. That’s how long I’ve been campaigning for U.S. Senate.

One year ago, when I launched this campaign, we were only four months into Trump’s second presidency. There was so much fear, anger, and uncertainty about the people in power who had no business being there.

I knew the same old crap out of Washington wouldn’t fix any of our problems.

All the political noise and exhaustion are exactly what this administration wants us to feel. They WANT us to feel powerless so that we stop showing up.

One year later, we are showing them exactly what happens when we refuse to be broken.

In this past year, we’ve gotten eight oil changes on our campaign car visiting every corner of Michigan to meet with people like you. Throughout this campaign, we’ve had hundreds of public events and hosted 17 brewery tours across the state.

Right from the get-go, I wanted to create events that were more accessible and less intimidating for people to come to. Because let’s be honest, there are people who will never come to a candidate forum or a town hall, not because they don’t care, but because it’s kind of a weird thing to do if you’re not already involved in politics.

You often hear politicians talking about “meeting people where they are,” then expecting those same people to come to them. Well, we know it’s much more common for people to head out to a local brewery than to come to a candidate forum. I wanted these events to feel similar — we’re just getting together over a beer or a bite to catch up, get to know each other, and talk about what’s going on in our lives.

I’ve always believed that this campaign should be about you because politics is just a means to how we build a government that represents everyone.

When I started my run for office, there were a lot of people who wanted to count us out. They doubted whether I could make the jump from the State Senate to the U.S. Senate. I didn’t let the noise get to me because I knew that the same people in D.C. who got us into this mess were not going to be the ones to get us out.

I’m so proud of how far we’ve come in the last year. Ours was the first campaign to announce collecting 30,000 signatures to get on the ballot — double what’s legally required (to make sure we have a safe buffer). And what’s more, we did it without a single paid canvasser. That’s unheard of for most statewide campaigns. We did it entirely led by volunteers, getting signatures in all of Michigan’s 83 counties (also not a requirement by law, but what can I say, we’re a determined lot). We now have over 2,000 volunteers statewide.

Our campaign is funded by more real people than any other campaign. In fact, we have more small-dollar grassroots support than our opponents combined, and the most donations from Michigan. We’ve got people on our team who’ve never been involved in a campaign at all, stepping out of their comfort zones to donate $5 or $10, come out to an event, help us validate signatures, or host a meet-and-greet or a fundraiser.

I’ll be honest with you. I was in a pretty dark place after election night in 2024. My biggest fear was that people would just give up, check out. Hell, I debated doing that too.

But you pulled me back in. Because you aren’t giving up. You’re coming out in droves, sharing your hopes, fears, dreams, and ideas. You’re rallying, protesting, using your voices and creativity at No Kings protests and Hands Off protests, finding joy in the journey even as the headlines and the reality of the administration keep barreling down on us.

They can’t keep us down. They won’t keep us down.

It’s this team that gives me hope. Every time someone comes up to me at an event and tells me that this campaign makes them feel like they can fight again, I want you to know that you are the reason I can, too.

We’re proving that you can’t just wave a magic wand and expect to win. There are no shortcuts to making change. You just have to roll up your sleeves and do the hard work.

One year down. Seven months to go.

It’s called Marygrove Conservancy. It sits on 6 Mile, right in the heart of my state Senate district, on the grounds of a college that dates back to 1845 — when three women, known as the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary led a Haitian woman named Theresa Maxis, founded a religious congregation and opened a school called the Young Ladies Academy.

Over the next 175 years, that school grew into Marygrove College. It became a fixture in the Livernois-McNichols neighborhood, a place where generations of Detroiters got their education, built their careers, and put down roots.

It’s a place that didn’t run away from hard times. After the turmoil of the 1967 rebellion in Detroit, Marygrove doubled down on its commitment to educating Black Americans, offering one scholarship to a senior from every public school in Detroit and even reaching out to parochial schools from Detroit to Philadelphia.

But its fighting spirit couldn’t match the harsh economic realities that would come, and in 2017, after declining enrollment, significant debt, and persistent financial challenges, the college ceased undergraduate education.

In 2019, Marygrove College closed.

For a while, nobody knew what would happen to it.

But here’s where the story gets good.

A coalition came together — the Detroit Public Schools Community District, the Kresge Foundation, the University of Michigan School of Education, community organizers, local activists, and yes, people like me in the legislature working to secure funding. They didn’t just ask, “How do we preserve this building?” They asked, What could this special place become?

Today, Marygrove is alive as the home of a first-of-its-kind P-20 educational campus. Lovingly known now as “The Community’s Campus,” it houses prenatal programs, an early childhood education center, a K-12 school district in partnership with Detroit Public Schools, a Detroit-based pathway for teachers through the creation of the nation’s first teaching school through the University of Michigan, offering undergraduate and graduate programs. Marygrove housed Mayor Mary Sheffield’s transition team — bringing city government out of downtown and into the neighborhoods. There are cultural events, dance classes, and event spaces.

It’s vibrant. It’s an educational, economic, and civic anchor for the community around it — in ways that honestly surprised even the people who fought hardest for it.

That’s the kind of work I love. Finding the people who dare to dream bigger, and doing everything in my power to help make it real. It’s exactly what I plan to bring to the U.S. Senate.
